Scientific web programming

Yves Sucaet, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology Laboratory, Iowa State University, Ames, IA
Michael Zimmermann, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology Laboratory, Iowa State University, Ames, IA

Schedule

Preparation

Due to time constraints, it is required that each student comes to the course with all necessary software installed on his/her computer. Please follow the instructions in the prerequisites section of this website to get your computer ready.

Questions were already asked if other operating systems are okay (Linux, Windows Vista...). You may bring your personally flavored OS, but you're on your own then in terms of support with required software. In other words: you will be responsible yourself for setting up a webserver, database and IDE on your machine. It can be done of course, but it should be clear that the instructors for the course cannot support multiple operating environments. If you still want to go through with this, of course Google is your friend as usual, and you can find many tutorials online on how to prepare yourself for the course, e.g. for Linux or Windows Vista.

A word about bringing your own computer to the course: it is our opinion that you learn easier and more when in a familar environment. So, when it comes to learning a programming environment, the best place to do this is right on your own computer. You already know where you like to store your files, you know the operating system, you're more comfortable with it than a random computer assigned to you in a random computer-lab. In addition, it's much easier to apply and further develop your new skills after the course if you have it on your own computer rather than an anonymous box somewhere on campus.
